An Apple Distinguished School

Educators around the country and even the world have been paying attention to Hillbrook for quite some time now, interested in our intentional and innovative teaching and learning practices. Apple, one of the world’s most successful and innovative companies, has taken notice—selecting Hillbrook as one of only 87 schools in the nation to be an Apple Distinguished School.

In our congratulatory letter, Stephanie Carulla, Vice President of Education at Apple writes:

“The administration and faculty at Hillbrook School have exhibited the five best practices of an Apple Distinguished School: visionary leadership, innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, compelling evidence of success, and a flexible learning environment.”

Needless to say, receiving this award is an incredible honor. But we are by no means going to rest on our laurels. The iPad program, launched in 2010 in the Middle School, has now “infiltrated” the Lower School, inspiring new ways to be excited and engaged in learning, and allowing more opportunities to differentiate instruction—one of the hallmarks of a Hillbrook education. Be sure to watch the Math-TV videos Ms. Johnson’s first grade created using their iPads and a green screen. In the Middle School, this is the inaugural year for the iPad Doctors—a program that is empowering students to be leaders as they step up and work with their peers, teachers, and administrators to determine where the iPad program goes next. We, as a school, are excited to see what they come up with.

The debut of the iLab this year has reinvigorated the conversation around the importance of environment in student engagement, confidence, and performance. If you’ve ever wondered what a day in the iLab is like, watch this video—students are engaged in the space and the learning process starts even before the actual lesson begins.

We have also partnered with CommonSense Media to create a 1:1 iPad Implementation Tool-Kit and a Digital Citizenship Tool-Kit, to share what we’ve learned—and what we’re learning—with the wider educational community. We are currently in the process of building the iPad Tool-Kit, creating videos featuring Hillbrook faculty that will be its foundation.

And we aren’t stopping there. Hillbrook was founded over 75 years ago on principles that, at the time, were considered cutting-edge. We are continuing in that tradition. The recognition of being an Apple Distinguished School is an amazing achievement, and no doubt we will continue to attract attention. Hillbrook is a leader in educational innovation, and it shows in the caliber of our students.

Please take some time to look at the pages and links below that show a glimpse into the innovative practices of students and teachers at Hillbrook.
