After serving as a virtual cello teacher with Quarantunes and seeing the positive impact that the intersection of virtual learning and educational opportunity had on young children and the teachers who instruct them, Hillbrook alumna Angie Zoric ('20) was inspired to take action. She recently founded Language Connect, an online group that strives to provide language education to everyone, including people with limited resources or access. Powered by like-minded volunteers who are fluent in both English and a world language, children of all ages can log on to classes - entirely taught through Zoom - and learn a new language, all free of cost.
"I see language as a key that opens an impressive variety of doors to different cultures waiting to be uncovered and bringing us experiences that will enrich our lives," Zoric says. "I created Language Connect so everyone can have a chance of learning a foreign language, therefore, we can move across borders and create a more inclusive environment and bring people together. With Language Connect, I want to bring people together around the world [through] language learning."
During her time at Hillbrook, Angie was an active leader in initiatives connected to The Scott Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Hillbrook. She even led some projects herself, including a virtual mask-making Social Impact Pop-Up Lab in the midst of COVID-19. The Scott Center for Social Entrepreneurship is one of the only JK-8 grade centers of its kind worldwide whose Vision is to inspire all learners to see the world as it is, imagine what it might be, and partner with their communities to realize long term impact for people and planet. Through meaningful, real-world engagement with social impact and entrepreneurship projects and real-life changemakers, students like Angie are inspired to harness their passions and curiosities in a way that connects to people or planet and reaches beyond to make a positive impact.
