"Be Kind" & Fostering Community Connection: 4th Graders Send Messages of Gratitude to Middle School Peers

The essential importance and value of community and togetherness have been reaffirmed for each of us as we navigate this extended shelter in place. Likewise, at Hillbrook, we know that the connections and friendships forged by students, teachers, and families are hallmark characteristics of daily life at school.

In a recent Reach Beyond Block, which is dedicated time in the schedule where Hillbrook JK-8th graders engage with real-world problems or questions and work together to create projects that reach beyond and make a difference in the world, 5th-7th graders considered how younger Hillbrook students might be feeling and experiencing our quarantine. They generated and reached out to lower school with a library of videos to cheer and entertain JK-4th graders with content spanning arts and crafts, musical performances, science experiments, and uplifting messages of support.

4th grade students connected back and sent heartwarming notes thanking their middle school buddies. Their notes of gratitude show how these videos brought them joy and enabled them to learn something new or practice a Hillbrook School core value - take a risk! - and try out a new skill.

Reach Beyond Block is scaffolded by the work of the Scott Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Hillbrook, the first-of-its-kind in a JK-8th grade school. The Scott Center leads with the question, "what matters to you and what do you want to do about it?" and challenges students to use this guiding question to make an impact on the world around them.
