MEET SAMANTHA | ABOUT THE SEARCH PROCESS | MARK'S ANNOUNCEMENT
Introducing Samantha Coyne Donnel, Hillbrook’s Next Head of School
Dear Hillbrook Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Head of School Search Committee, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Samantha Coyne Donnel as Hillbrook School’s next Head of School, beginning July 1, 2027.
Following an extensive national search, the Search Committee enthusiastically recommended Samantha to the Board of Trustees, which unanimously approved the appointment. Samantha will succeed Mark Silver following his extraordinary 18-year tenure as Head of School.
From the beginning of this process, we sought someone who could appreciate the strength of Hillbrook today while helping us thoughtfully shape what comes next: a person deeply committed to students and teaching and learning; warm, curious, and relational; skilled at building and supporting strong teams; and prepared to guide an increasingly complex JK–12 school across two campuses.
Looking Ahead
Samantha will officially begin as Head of School on July 1, 2027. Between now and then, Mark, Samantha, the Board, and Hillbrook’s leadership team will work together to ensure a thoughtful transition. We will share opportunities in the months ahead for the community to begin getting to know Samantha and her family.
At the same time, we have an important year still ahead with Mark. As we prepare for Hillbrook’s next chapter, we look forward to celebrating his remarkable 18 years of service and the lasting impact he has had on generations of students, families, employees, and alumni.
This moment holds both deep gratitude for the Hillbrook that Mark and so many others have helped build and genuine excitement for what lies ahead. We feel fortunate to have the coming months to celebrate one important chapter in Hillbrook’s story while thoughtfully preparing for the next.
Please join us in congratulating Samantha Coyne Donnel and welcoming her as Hillbrook School’s next Head of School.
With gratitude and excitement,
Shannon Hunt-Scott

About the Search Process
Today’s announcement is the culmination of a search process that began in April following Mark’s announcement that the 2026–27 school year would be his final year as Head of School.
Working in partnership with Carney Sandoe and Associates, the Search Committee considered a strong national pool of candidates. From dozens of applications screened by CS&A, the committee reviewed 14 candidate dossiers and selected eight semifinalists for in-depth interviews. From that group, four finalists were invited to Hillbrook for two-day visits across our Los Gatos and San José campuses.
During those visits, finalists met with students, employees, families, school leaders, and trustees. We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated, welcomed our candidates, and shared thoughtful and candid feedback. Your perspectives helped the Search Committee understand each finalist more fully and informed its recommendation to the Board.
We are grateful to the members of the Head of School Search Committee for the care, time, and wisdom they brought to this process, and to Karen Whitaker, Jennifer Wong Christensen, and Dan Miller of Carney, Sandoe & Associates for their partnership throughout the search.
