Lower School
Exploring with joy.

At Hillbrook’s Lower School, every student–no matter how young–understands they are a unique and powerful person with the ability to choose how they will make a difference in the world.

Our Lower School students are respected as learners who are actively engaged in their own journeys. Experienced teachers guide their explorations which are as much about finding joy in the process as they are about finding answers. The Lower School curriculum is challenging, flexible, and anchored in standards – it’s designed to keep bodies active and minds reflective as our students sharpen their skills and broaden their understanding of the world, their community, and themselves. Our students understand that the most satisfying learning happens when they go beyond what’s comfortable and take a risk–and they’re not afraid to do it within a school community built on kindness.

The Lower School Educational Experience
Hillbrook’s Lower School is a remarkable place for children to learn and grow. Students are welcomed into a joyful community where each child is known and valued for all of who they are. Our 7:1 classroom ratio and co-teaching model allow Hillbrook teachers to meet each child where they are so that students can reach their highest individual potential. We embrace a philosophy that inspires the growth of each learner at their individually remarkable pace while providing rich opportunities to expand their curiosity, thinking, and social-emotional growth.

Hillbrook students learn by doing. Our experienced teachers make each day an adventure by engaging students in hands-on activities and project-based learning. Hillbrook’s exceptional program develops mastery in foundational academic skills while also fostering collaborative skills of problem-solving, communication, and empathy. Our expansive program, inclusive community, and 17-acre, park-like campus nurture young hearts and minds, allowing students to discover their passions and grow into confident, creative learners.

The Lower School Schedule
Teachers at Hillbrook collaborate extensively to design school days that engage and inspire young learners. Students in JK-4th grade start each day in homeroom with Morning Meeting, emphasizing social emotional learning (SEL) and community-building, and remain there for core subjects like mathematics, social studies and literacy. They visit specialist teachers for science, Spanish, art, music, physical education and library. Hillbrook also dedicates time in the schedule each week to empowering students to “reach beyond themselves to make a difference in the world,” through authentic and meaningful service, community building, leadership, and civic engagement opportunities. Each and every day, our beautiful outdoor learning spaces invite children to explore nature and express themselves through movement and play.
